What is hydroponics?

Hydroponics is a modern method of growing plants without the use of traditional soil. Special systems are often used for hydroponics, which can be installed both in open spaces and in closed growboxes. Such systems include tanks for nutrient solution, pumps to circulate water, and a lighting system that replaces natural sunlight.

Hydroponic systems can be suitable for grooving different types of cannabis such as sativa and indica. Sativa, which requires more space to grow, can grow successfully in vertical hydroponic systems, while the compact Indica feels comfortable in small grow boxes.

In addition, hydroponics allows you to control every aspect of growing: temperature, humidity, lighting and the composition of the nutrient solution. This makes the method particularly popular with those who want to maximize plant quality and yields.


Pros of hydroponics

Hydroponics is becoming increasingly popular due to a number of significant advantages that make this method attractive to professionals and hobbyists alike.

In hydroponic systems, plants receive nutrients directly from the solution, bypassing the need to extract them from the soil. This allows them to spend less energy searching for resources and more energy growing. For example, sativa, which normally takes longer to grow, reaches maturity much faster on hydroponics.

Hydroponics allows for ideal growing conditions, including precise control of light, humidity and nutrient levels. This promotes not only faster growth, but also richer yields for both indica and sativa.

Hydroponic systems are particularly efficient in their use of water. The solution circulates within the system and only a small portion of it evaporates. This makes the method environmentally sustainable and economically viable, especially in regions with limited water resources.

The absence of soil eliminates the possibility of insect or disease infestation of the roots, which often reside in the soil. This is especially true for closed systems such as growboxes, where keeping cleanliness is key.

Hydroponic systems take up less space than traditional methods. This allows them to be used even in small spaces. This makes it easy to grow plants in a city apartment using growboxes with appropriate lighting.

Minuses of hydroponics

Despite the many advantages, hydroponics also has its disadvantages, which are worth considering before you start using this method. A detailed understanding of the disadvantages will help you avoid mistakes and prepare for possible difficulties.

Setting up and running a hydroponic system requires a substantial initial investment. The system requires tanks, pumps, quality lighting, pH and EC sensors, and substrates to anchor the roots. For example, in growboxes for hydroponics, it is important to use powerful lamps that mimic sunlight, which also increases costs.

Hydroponics requires certain knowledge and skills. You need to know how to properly formulate the nutrient solution, control pH and conductivity, and monitor water and air temperature. This can be challenging for beginners, especially if it is their first time growing sativa or indica.

In a hydroponic system, the plants are completely dependent on the stability of the nutrient supply. If the pump fails, the roots will quickly dry out, which can lead to plant death. This is especially critical for varieties that require more care, such as sativa.

Hydroponic systems require a constant source of electricity to run the pumps, lights and ventilation. A power outage, even for a short period of time, can have a significant impact on plant health, especially in enclosed spaces such as growboxes.

Improper nutrient concentrations or unbalanced pH can quickly affect plant growth and health. For example, excessive amounts of certain elements can cause root burn or a deficiency of other substances necessary for growth.

Hydroponic systems require constant maintenance. The tanks need to be cleaned regularly, the nutrient solution needs to be replaced, and the pumps and filters need to be checked to make sure they are in good working order. This can be tedious for those who are not willing to devote a lot of time to the growing process.

Although hydroponics saves water, it can be less environmentally friendly due to the use of plastic for the system and chemical components for the nutrient solution. The systems also require disposal of used solutions, which can create an additional ecological footprint.

Hydroponics offers an impressive opportunity to grow sativa and indica, especially when space is limited and with the right lighting. However, to use this method successfully, one must be prepared for additional costs, regular maintenance and the need for constant monitoring.
