Against the backdrop of the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine, a US-based organization that trains in psychedelic therapy is teaming up with Ukrainian medical professionals with an offer to teach plant-based medicine for free to treat serious psychological trauma.
It comes a month after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law legalizing medical marijuana to help soldiers deal with physical and mental wounds suffered during the war with Russia. U.S.-based Fluence announced Wednesday a new initiative to help treat brave warriors, in a very strong country, with psychedelics.
Together with the Ukrainian Psychedelic Research Association (UPRA) and the U.S. nonprofit organization Heal Ukraine Trauma (HUT), Fluence said it is providing free training materials for psychologists and doctors in the war-torn country who are interested in using psychedelics in their practice.
Interesting facts:
"Psychedelics include synthetic and semi-synthetic substances (LSD, DOB, 2C-B, DOM, DMT), psilocybin and psilocin found in certain species of mushrooms, mescaline (the active ingredient in the peyote cactus), LSA and ayahuasca (also ayawaska from Quechua ayawaska), a traditional shamanic tea brewed from various plants".
Unlike medical cannabis, psychedelics have not been legalized in Ukraine. Despite this, more than 540 mental health professionals have already signed up to participate in the program, Fluence reports.
"We are honored to support Ukrainian mental health professionals, in collaboration with the Ukrainian Association for Psychedelic Studies and Heal Ukraine Trauma. Our educational materials on psychedelic therapy, will empower practitioners to heal the deep psychological effects of war."
Ingmar Gorman, CEO of Fluence, press release.

Fluence has been involved in research into the therapeutic potential of psilocybin to treat alcoholism, Gorman said of the results of a clinical trial conducted last year that paved the way for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) organization to consider the substance MDMA as a possible treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Dmytro Gurin, an MP from the president's Servant of the People party and a member of the parliamentary health committee, told members of the European Parliament last November that he wanted support to make Ukraine a center for psychedelics research to address the war-related mental health crisis.
"We are facing a catastrophic challenge," he said. "And such challenges require bold decisions."
Dmitry Gurin, MP for Servant of the People.
The Ukrainian military is already collaborating with U.S. proponents of psychedelics to study the use of ibogaine to treat traumatic brain injuries in military personnel. The study, published in January, suggests a "life-changing" effect of the psychedelic among veterans with PTSD and depression.
"The transformative power of psychedelic therapy is a beacon of hope for our nation, which has suffered greatly from the scars of war. This innovative approach to mental health is not just a treatment. For Ukraine, where the collective psyche bears the heavy burden of war and related trauma, it is not just a medical achievement, but a crucial step towards national recovery and emotional resilience."
Oleg Orlov, CEO of UPRA.
In the U.S., the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has issued a request for applications for in-depth studies on the use of psychedelics to treat PTSD and depression. Meanwhile, the FDA organization, along with scientists, held a public meeting on the next steps for research and further development of psychedelic drugs.
This directed step forward came several months after the FDA issued a landmark draft guidance on psychedelics, providing scientists with a framework for conducting research that could lead to the development of new drugs.
