A study of the impact of marijuana laws

Allowing the use of marijuana for medical purposes has not had a significant impact on the mental health of the U.S. population. However, legalization for therapeutic purposes benefits those for whom it is intended. This is the conclusion reached by researchers from the University of Basel.

In the US, access to marijuana has been eased in most states since the mid-1990s, both through medical authorization and decriminalization of recreational use. Nevertheless, liberalization is still controversial, and the effects on the well-being of certain populations and the therapeutic value of marijuana remain debated.

While some fear the negative consequences associated with addiction, others emphasize the potential medical benefits for people suffering from chronic pain, nausea or seizures.

In a new study, researchers from Basel investigated whether medical cannabis in the United States is improving the situation of patients and whether it is having a negative impact on the mental health of the general population.

Probabilistic analysis

To conduct the analysis, the researchers combined two large datasets. They used information on nearly eight million people who participated using telephone surveys between 1993 and 2018 in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Program, which collects data on a variety of aspects, including mental well-being. They also used data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, which covers issues related to health and drug use in the United States.

The researchers identified different groups using statistical methods. The study included people who were very likely to abstain from marijuana use, use it for recreational purposes, or take it for medical reasons. Groups of people with a high likelihood of suffering from chronic pain were also identified. Mental health was assessed using a self-assessment in which respondents reported the number of days in the previous month when they experienced mental health problems.

Medical marijuana varieties

Medical cannabis varieties are specifically designed to treat and manage a variety of medical conditions, including chronic pain, anxiety disorders, epilepsy and inflammatory diseases. These varieties are characterized by higher levels of active ingredients such as cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol. CBD, while not having psychoactive properties, is widely used to relieve inflammation, reduce pain and anxiety, and improve sleep. Positive effects of therapeutic use

Researchers, using statistical methods, evaluated the impact of legally allowing medical use of marijuana. Their results show that easier access improves the mental health of people who use marijuana for medical reasons, as well as those who suffer from chronic pain. According to the study, these two groups spend 0.3 fewer days per month struggling with mental health issues after the law change.

However, the researchers found no impact on the mental health of recreational users or the younger population.
